Cannabis oil on the NHS? Mother of ill son delivers 170000 signature petition to Downing Street calling for CBD to be available on prescription.

The mother of a young boy with epilepsy traveled to Downing Street yesterday to deliver a 170000 signature petition. The petition has sufficient signatures to trigger a Parliamentary debate to decide if cannabis oil (cannabidiol) should be available on the NHS.

Karen Gray Collected over 170000 names on the petition to help her son, Murray, who suffers from Doose Syndrome / Myoclonic-Astatic Epilepsy (MAE).

When she arrived in London, Karen met with her Local MP Christine Jarvis And representatives of the petition website, 38 degrees. She expressed her gratitude to all those who have helped.

“It’s great that people have been willing to sign a petition to help Murray. My son has spent years of his young life in hospital. There is an effective treatment that could give him his childhood back. To know it’s out there, but is being blocked by the Westminster government is heartbreaking. It’s simply common sense – if a treatment works we should let our NHS provide it. I want to see the process speeded up and I understand that we have to make sure it’s safe.”

Karen explains Murray’s condition on her petition page:

“My 5-year-old son has a rare form of epilepsy which means he lives with up to 100 seizures a day and spends most of his life lying in a hospital bed shaking. It is very hard to control with the medicine currently available”.

She goes on to explain “it has been proven in other countries that medical cannabis helps people with illnesses like his. In the USA medical cannabis has helped stop the daily aggressive seizures that children with this syndrome have. If medical cannabis was available on the NHS my son may have a chance of a normal life.”

CBD is already legal to purchase in the UK, although quality and strength can vary from brand to brand. For those people needing specific doses, it can be difficult to know exactly how much is required. If Karen’s petition is successful it will enable accurate doses of high-quality cannabidiol to be prescribed by Doctors on the NHS.

Cannabis oil (CBD) has Become extremely popular in the UK over the last couple of years with many people using it to self-medicate for a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, the cost of cannabidiol can be an obstacle for a lot of people. High doses are sometimes needed, and a 5% strength 10ml bottle of the oil can cost approximately £40 (enough for 1 week). This prevents thousands of people from being able to use CBD.

Scottish Lib Dems MP Christine Jardine said: “I’m delighted for Karen and Murray that they have reached this target with such fantastic support. I will do everything to ensure we have another parliamentary debate and that cannabidiol treatments are available to those whose lives they could change for the better.”
